Rand - Baldini & Castoldi - Milan - XX 1942

This book is dear to me because it was my mother in the second cover is his signature. I remember who spoke of him as a compelling novel. The fact that we live talking about, also compounded Addio Kira , makes me think that would involve the courts even in the two films from the book, which came up with these titles in 1942, Alida Valli, Rossano Brazzi and Fosco Giachetti.

The author AYN RAND, pseudionimo Zinov'evna Alisa Rozenbaum, American writer and philosopher of Russian origin (St. Petersburg 1905-New York 1982) in 1925, during a trip to the USA, decided not to return to the USSR and settled in Los Angeles, where he began his work as a screenwriter in Hollywood, working inter alia with Cecil B. De Mille.

The novel tells the story of Kira, a heroine very modern for its time in the story (1920) that to defend and protect the man she is in love, a foe of Bolshevism as the son of an admiral shot counter, do not hesitate to become the mistress of an official of the GPU, the Soviet secret police. The characters described

often suffer from a schematic, functional basic idea that pervades the entire novel, which is a final conviction of a totalitarian state, fundamentally illiberal and corrupt officials by the same party.

Italian fascism, Bolshevism interested in publishing a work, made a translation in 1937 by Giuseppina Ripamonti Perez, who also writes an interesting preface, which he concludes:

Paper, then, that is not only pleasant and interesting for its plot and its characters, but also because of his energetic and truthful description of the dire conditions brought to a people unhappy with a system destroyer of what is most beautiful and high in human life: religion, homeland, family. "

In 1942, without seeking any permission to the author, the director Goffredo Alessandrini he made two films, in fact we live and Addio Kira, who had a huge success, because people understand that the theme of the film was not only against communism but against all forms of totalitarianism, including fascism. A few months after deploying the system censured them both.

To return to the novel, there are two parts that emerge from the overall description of the vicissitudes of the protagonists, and they are: a long and lucid description of St. Petersburg in the first chapter of Part Two:

.
.... Petrograd was born, was created. The will of a man had given rise to where the men would not have chosen to live. An inexorable imperative imposed the creation of the city and the place where it was to be built. The men brought the earth to fill a swamp where the mosquitoes were not moving. And like mosquitoes men died and fell in the mud teeming. No hand willing helped to build a new capital: it arose from the work of soldiers, thousands of soldiers, regiments received orders and could not refuse to deal a mortal enemy: rifle or swamp. They fell and the land they had taken with their own bone formed the floor of the city. Petrograd, say its inhabitants, based on the skeletons.

In four wonderful pages describing the Rand St. Petersburg, and the subtle relationship that links the city to its inhabitants, and then the importance of Nevsky, its main highway, which crosses the River Neva, with the elegant port, its palaces, the statues, bridges, the Winter Palace, the fortress of SS.Pietro and Paul, four unforgettable pages that reveal the author's love for his hometown.

The other description, which emerges forcefully from the novel, and the interior of a trendy bar, luxurious, attended by party officials doubt, enhanced by the new black bag and squalid female figures escort vintage . The portraits of these obscene and tragic figures appear to be drawn from the tables of expressionist George Grosz:

.
.. Men were sitting around the tables. Yellow flashes squirted from their diamond buttons and beads of sweat on their faces red and hot ....... In one corner was a bald head and yellow ink on a red steak on a white plate. The man cut off his bistessa scratching the porcelain with a knife and when a morsel in her mouth disappeared the fleshy red lips looked like a piece of meat hanging. Across the table a young girl of fifteen with red hair eating fast with his head encased in the shoulders, stand up when flushed from the tip of the short nose and freckled freckled until white neck and her mouth twitched as if about to cry .

Kira The complex relationship between the two men in her life, can be summed up in the verses of the song by Marco Ferradini Teorema that as hypothesized, the more it hurt a woman in love, the more you keep the favors and vice versa, of course, how good verify Andrei Taganov, honest officer of GPU, suicide out of love and disappointment on the revolution betrayed, as Majakovsky.

Consume the long march of Kira in the endless snow, oblivious to the inhuman effort, towards the Lithuanian border, in search of freedom, which will inexorably, in the form of a bullet that leaves examined on the snow.

A solitary tree soared away over the plain. He had no leaves. I do not shave her arms thin and they had taken up the snow. Stretched full life of a future spring, with thin branches like arms that rose in the dawn on a vast land where many things were possible.

She lay on top of a hill and watched the sky. A white hand was hanging motionless above the pensioners and small red drops fell slowly down into the snow below.

She smiled. He knew he was dying. But now it did not matter. He knew something that no human words could express. And now he knew. He had waited for this thing and felt as if it had occurred, as if she had lived. Life was also exists only because it had known what it should be, and she felt it now as a song without sound, deep under the small wound that threw red drops on the snow, whence iscivan Pronda of the red drops. A moment or eternity? ... Does it matter? Life, not won, and there had to exist.

She smiled, the last smile to all that was possible.
