Andrea Camilleri: Sicilian' HISTORY AND FICTION

D Camilleri had read only the 'intense biography of Pirandello Lugi: Biography of his son changed (2000), and the hilarious pastiche LascomparsadiPatò (2000) and I was both fascinated and for his obvious ability narrative, that the disenchantment with which humorous look at things in the world. The language then is a continual epiphany for the great semantic richness that characterizes the different social units within the characters.

The brewer Preston , that the title story, is an opera by the prolific (28 works well!) And little-known Italian composer Luigi Ricci (1805-1859). The historically proven fact that this work was chosen by the prefect of Caltanissetta, the Tuscan Bortuzzo, to inaugurate the local opera house, thus triggering the tragicomic series of events, which are the subject of the story is the famous Survey of conditions of Sicily 1875-76 .

The characters are expertly sketched with a few effective touches, and supplemented by dialogues that characterize the personality.

Irresistible vision ( from silent film) engineer Gerd Hoffer, inventor of a fire fighting wagon with steam pump, work with his team of firefighters.

accompany the various vicissitudes of the prefect of Montelusa attempt to represent this against the wishes of the citizens of Vigata, including unlikely revolutionary, officers and men fearful of respect: this varies humanity rests on the look of shrewd Camilleri takes the hyperbole and paradox, the bitter awareness of the absurd in which we live (yesterday and today) and the dull ache for the immutability of this condition.

The narrative structure is divided into chapters whose incipit refers to other novels that the reader is called to identify, requires Player Model (1) , the one who takes care to establish a precise time to scan narrated events and reconstructs them chronologically.

is Andrea Camilleri, among old papers at home, a ministerial decree for the grant of a private telephone line.

"The document assumes that a network of more or less delirious requirements of red tape that I should be now to write on a fictional story."

result is The granting of Telephone (1998) which tells the misfortunes of Pippo Genuardi, owner of the first quad motor & Levassor Panarda brand, bought in Paris for the Universal Exhibition of 1889, who decides to ask for a private telephone line.

In this bittersweet tale problems that arise, from the unification of Italy today, seem inescapable condition of the people of Sicily, including mismanagement, stupidity and bureaucratic mafia, but the light touch of Camilleri, its ironic, always manages to pull a smile.

There are books end in themselves, concluding that by merely reading and do not require additional, others that refer to other readings and these are the ones I love most.

The granting of the phone has an opening quotation intriguing

...) and the military courts, and robberies, the murders, robberies, hatched and executed by the new police in the name of the Real Government, and falsification of documents and subtraction and shameless political processes: all the first government of the Right Honourable! And then the Left came to power, and began again with exceptional measures to Sicily, and misappropriation and fraud and bribery and favors outrageous and scandalous waste of public money, prefects, magistrates delegates at the service of ministerial deputies, and patronage and outright electoral fraud; expenditure crazy, degrading flattery, oppression of the vanquished and workers, assisted and protected by law, and ensure the impunity to the oppressors .....

Luigi Pirandello Old and young

Much more than just a stimulus to a new interpretation: the 150th anniversary of the Unification of Italy,
almost a provocation to re-read the procedures and results critically.
